Gravity Retaining Walls

One of the most common types of retaining wall, a gravity wall uses its weight to hold back the soil. We build a gravity wall with a thick base and a slight backwards lean to provide strength. Gravity walls are usually large in size and can accommodate different heights. Smaller walls often use timber. Taller walls often use a trench or concrete footer for extra support and utilize stronger materials such as concrete, brick or stone.

Anchored Retaining Walls

If you only have space for a thinner retaining wall, anchor walls may be the solution you are looking for. Anchor walls use cables to connect the top and bottom of the wall. We embed the cables in concrete to provide the structure with enough strength to support the pressure of the soil. This extra support from the cables allows this type of wall allows a thinner and/or taller than a gravity retaining wall.

Sheet Pile Retaining Walls

Sheet pile retaining walls are the best option if you are constructing on softer soil and need extra support. Like anchored walls, piling walls use cables to tie together the wall and anchor. The cables are sunk to a depth that counteracts the force on the wall. This type of retaining wall is also ideal if you are building in a smaller space and don’t want to disturb surrounding properties.

Cantilever Retaining Walls

Also known as reinforced retaining walls, cantilever walls use either a T or L shaped footing buried under the soil or poles firmly inserted into the earth to provide strong support. Most commonly used in construction, they are amongst the largest types of retaining wall systems, capable of reaching up to 10 meters in height. They are less common for a residential wall because of their size.
