Edging can have a practical role as well, such as holding mulch in place and preventing mowers from damaging your prized plants. There are many different types of garden edging available, so it can be confusing to know what to do. Easy! Tap into extensive experienced and knowledge of the Hobart Landscaping Services team. Trench Edging
The oldest and most cost-effective edging technique is trench edging. This involves making a cut in between the lawn and garden bed straight down, about 15cm deep. Make another cut at a 45 degree angle toward the garden bed and away from the lawn until it meets the first straight cut at 15cm deep. The second cut prevents grass from spreading across the border and into the garden bed. Finally, fill the trench with mulch, trim the edge of the grass until it’s nice and neat!
Curb Edging
Curbing is a very clean way to divide space in a yard. The two most popular methods are to use poured concrete and concrete pavers. Both come in a variety of colors. Poured concrete is more flexible because it can be poured into a variety of shapes and personalised with shells, stamps etc. while wet. Pavers come in a number of styles that can be installed mix and match patterns. They are also more flexible than concrete as individual pieces are easily removed when needed.
Bender Board Edging
Bender board edging is generally made from flexible recycled polyethylene plastic that comes in several color choices and sizes. Because it’s flexible, it’s hard to lay in a straight line. However, it’s relatively easy to install in a small trench. If you are creating bends, hold them in place with matching plastic stakes every meter or so. Make sure to install the bender board high enough to prevent grass and other plants from simply extending their roots over the bender board!
Metal Edging
Unlike bender board, metal edging can easily stay in a crisp straight line. However, the choice of metal matters as some metals rust, while others do not. Thicker edging is more durable but is also more expensive. If you have hard soil, you may need to dig a trench to install your edging. Otherwise, metal edging can often be easily installed by placing a 2×4 plank along the top edge of the metal and hammering it into the ground.
Wooden Edging
Wooden edging creates a rustic, organic feel to the yard. It can be something as big and bold as old railway ties, or something much simpler. Treated wood will last longer, but if you’re using it near a vegetable garden it’s best to use untreated wood to avoid chemicals leaching into the soil. Note that wood is always cut in straight planks, so it can be difficult to use if your garden edges have curves in them!
Rocks and Boulders
By far, the most natural-looking way to incorporate rocks and boulders as edging is to use stones native to your area and bury them a few centimeters deep to make it look like they have been in place for a while. Make sure the rocks and boulders are of a similar size to create continuity!
Brick Edging
Installation of brick edging is relatively easy. It’s often not necessary to mortar a brick in place if you are laying them flat. Simply set them side by side on top of sand. Newer bricks come in crisp colors, while salvaged bricks lend a more rustic, faded appearance.
